GET READY FOR A RESET | With the General Election tomorrow, what lies ahead for the social business sector asks David Alcock of Anthony Collins Solicitors.
“Nowhere to hide: we must make the most of this reset opportunity” guest blog is a pre-General Election reflection from social purpose law firm Partner, David Alcock of Anthony Collins Solicitors.
Ahead of the General Election tomorrow, and from where I’m standing, the social economy needs a bigger share of the political pie. Following the release of the manifestos, it’s clear that almost all the main parties intend to address the crisis in public services provision.
Interesting ideas put forward include the Lib Dems’ promotion of a ‘public benefit company’ model for monopoly utility and water companies and Labour’s aim to double the size of the co-operative and mutuals sector.
But, when it comes to the chaos of a General Election, history tells us that promises to change the social economy for the better often get forgotten. Whilst this year’s pledges recognise the benefits of social businesses and distinct forms of ownership play in society and the economy, such commitments cannot be put on the back burner.
We’re just a few days from seeing our new government take shape – alongside many social business organisations, I’m hoping to see new policies that supercharge the value the sector has already brought to many local communities.
