Health & Social Care Social Economy in the West Midlands: Key Insights from the November Roundtable
10th December 2025
On 12th November, leaders from across the West Midlands came together for the BSSEC Roundtable to discuss the pressing challenges facing health and social care social economy organisations. These organisations — over 9,000 strong, employing 100,000 people — are the backbone of inclusive growth and community wellbeing.
But the pressures are mounting through unsustainable funding, workforce shortages, rising demand, and the struggle to scale innovation while staying true to their social mission.

We heard from inspiring leaders like Nabila from Ways for Wellbeing UK CIC, who called for investment to turn pilot projects into sustained delivery, and Dave Rogers from Midland Mencap, who highlighted the urgent need for infrastructure support, especially for leaders, digital transformation, and recognition of the sector’s role in the wider social economy.

The message was clear: sustainability depends on collaboration, leadership development, and long-term commitment to equity and inclusion. Policymakers and stakeholders must step up — by investing in leadership programmes, fostering innovation hubs, and embedding social economy partners in regional planning.
The Roundtable ended with a challenge: how can each of us contribute to addressing these systemic issues? The future of health and social care in the West Midlands depends on collective action, bold investment, and a shared vision for inclusive growth.
