Budget commentary from the sector

Social Enterprise mag online has a good round-up of initial feedback on George Osborne’s ‘unavoidable’ but ‘progressive’ budget here — noting, amongst other things that it contained no mention at all of social enterprise, no mention of the ‘big society’, and no confirmation of the Big Society investment bank funded through c.£200m lying in dormant bank accounts (although a ‘green investment bank’ specifically targetting green technologies was mentioned).

Some are already saying that the ‘big society’ is starting to look like a cover story for cuts and the dismantling of universal public service provision. Peter Holbrook at the Social Enterprise Coalition, however, says he was not surprised at there being no specific mention of social enterprise and “fully expects more information on the shape and size of the Big Society Bank to follow once more detail emerges”.
