A growing sector
The social enterprise sector is growing. In the mid-2000s, research suggested that there were around 350 social enterprises in Birmingham and the surrounding area. This figure is now closer to 500.
New-start social enterprises have fuelled this growth, but we have also seen many voluntary organisations become more enterprising, adopting income-generation and trading models as a means of increasing their income and widening services.
We have also seen a significant take-up of the Community Interest Company legal structure, both among new-starts and existing social enterprises and voluntary organisations that have chosen to convert to it.
There is more information about social enterprise legal structures in part 4 of our guide Support for social enterprises and third sector organisations in Birmingham & Solihull — who provides what?
